WHAT’S NEXT

Newsletter #85 / April, 14 2025

April 5th was a day of encouraging actions taken by millions of Americans across the country. At my location I met women in their 60s and 70s who have never protested before.  I met a 30-year-old mom with a 3-year-old daughter who wants to save libraries so her child can learn about the diverse world we live in.  And there was the disabled woman in a wheelchair with a sign that simply read “8647” .. 86 everything Trump stands for!

But what’s next, more protests?

I spent the next day discussing how we harness the anger, fear and frustration created by this administration’s efforts to tear down our country and destroy our way of life.  This is not about government efficiency; this is about Trump consolidating personal power and giving his cronies access to government.

We, Dems101, have an opportunity to further our mission and build community.  I, and I’m sure you, made connections with other organizations when coordinating efforts for April 5th.  We need to nurture those connections by attending their meetings and events.  Work with them to protect the vulnerable populations in your communities.

While working with these groups opportunities will present themselves to promote our values of Freedom, Justice, and Opportunity.  Pass out Democratic Creed cards at meetings.  When asked about your interests and other affiliations talk about Dems 101. Ask them to join our Lincoln Initiative.  Offer to make presentations about how our shared American values can be used to bring us back together as a country, that we all want the same basic things and a just society for all.

Once we establish that these values support their activities, we can begin to discuss how Democratic candidates are the ones who will protect their rights and ensure a bright future for them and their families.

This takes courage to step outside our comfort zone sometimes.  And it certainly won’t happen in two or three months.  2025 is the year to lay the groundwork for a successful 2026 election cycle.  We can build from there.

If you are in Ohio, the time is now to recruit for the November election of local officials.  That’s where it starts – school boards, township trustees, mayors.  Encourage individuals in your networks to consider running for office.  Have you considered running for office?  School boards will be critical to the survival of our public education systems.

Whatever your interest – volunteer, join a new group, become a poll worker – every action will help make a difference.
